What "8-bit" really means — and how to turn a photo into pixel art

The chunky, pixelated "8-bit" look is everywhere again — in indie games, album art, profile pictures, and social feeds. It reads instantly as retro and playful. But it's easy to forget that this aesthetic wasn't a style choice originally; it was the unavoidable result of what 1980s hardware could actually do. Understanding where the look came from makes it more fun to recreate — so here's what "8-bit" really means, and how to turn your own photo into pixel art.

Where "8-bit" comes from

The term points to a specific era of computing. The home computers and games consoles of the 1980s — machines like the NES, the Commodore 64, and the original Game Boy — were built around 8-bit processors. That number describes how much data the chip handled at once, and it came with tight limits on memory and what the screen could show.

Those limits shaped everything you saw. There wasn't enough memory to store detailed, high-resolution images or millions of colours, so graphics were built from a small grid of relatively large pixels, using a strictly limited palette. Artists worked within those constraints, placing each pixel deliberately. What we now call the "8-bit look" is really the fingerprint of that hardware.

The key insight: the 8-bit style is defined by two limits working together — low resolution (few, chunky pixels) and a small palette (few colours). Recreate both and a modern photo instantly reads as retro. Miss either one and the effect falls flat.

Why the Game Boy was green

The original 1989 Game Boy is the perfect example of constraint becoming identity. Its little screen was a simple monochrome LCD that could display just four shades — and because of the display technology, those shades came out as tones of green. Every game on the system, however ambitious, had to be drawn entirely within those four greenish values. That severe limit is exactly why a four-green image is instantly recognisable as "Game Boy" decades later. The constraint became the character.

How a photo becomes pixel art

Recreating the look means deliberately reimposing those old limits on a modern image, in two steps.

First, reduce the resolution. A photo is shrunk down to a small grid and then blown back up without smoothing, so each little block becomes one large, hard-edged pixel. This is what gives pixel art its chunky, blocky quality. The smaller the grid, the fewer and bigger the pixels, and the more abstract and retro the result.

Second, reduce the colours. A modern photo contains thousands of subtly different shades. Mapping every one of them to the nearest colour in a small, fixed palette — four greens, sixteen colours, whatever you choose — is what truly sells the vintage feel. Without this step you just have a blocky photo; with it, you have something that looks like it came off an old console.

Different photos suit different palettes, so it's worth trying a few. A portrait with strong contrast might look striking in four greens, while a colourful scene might keep more of its character with a larger palette.

What makes a good source photo

Not every image pixelates well. Photos with a clear subject and good contrast translate best, because the shapes survive being reduced to a coarse grid. Very busy or cluttered images tend to turn to mush once the detail is stripped away. Faces and simple objects on clean backgrounds are reliably fun. The trick is that pixel art works by suggestion — you're giving the eye just enough blocks to recognise the subject, so anything that's already bold and readable will fare better than something fussy.
