What your photos reveal about you (and how to check)
Take a photo on a phone with location services turned on, and the file that gets saved contains more than the picture. Tucked invisibly inside it is a block of data that can include the make and model of the phone, the date and time down to the second, the camera settings — and, most significantly, the exact latitude and longitude where you were standing when you pressed the shutter.
This hidden information is called EXIF data, and most people have no idea it's there. It doesn't show up when you look at the photo. It travels with the file quietly, and whether that matters depends entirely on where the photo goes next.
The part worth caring about: location
Most of what EXIF stores is harmless. Nobody is endangered by a file knowing it was shot at 1/250th of a second. The exception is the GPS coordinates, because they can be precise enough to point at a specific building.
A holiday snapshot with its location intact is no great risk. A photo taken inside your home is a different matter: its coordinates are, in effect, your address. Sell something online and post a picture taken in your living room, and you may be handing your location to every stranger who saves that image. The same goes for photos of children in places they regularly are.
The uncomfortable part isn't that this data exists — it's that it's invisible. You can't tell by looking at a photo whether it's carrying your location or not. The only way to know is to check.
Why you usually get away with it anyway
Here's the reassuring twist: a lot of the ways we share photos strip this data out automatically, often without telling you. The large social networks generally remove metadata when you upload, so the version other people can download usually has no location left in it. That's a side effect of how they process images, not a promise, but in practice it protects most people most of the time.
Other channels are less predictable. While writing this, I tested emailing photos from a phone to a laptop and found the location had been stripped somewhere in transit — a small privacy win by accident. But that behaviour isn't universal. Send a photo as a file attachment through some apps, share it in "document" mode, or hand someone the original off your device, and the location can arrive fully intact.
The honest summary is: you cannot assume a photo has been cleaned, and you cannot assume it hasn't. Different apps and services do different things, and none of them tell you which. The only reliable way to know what a specific file contains is to look at that specific file.
How to check a photo yourself
You don't need special software. Any tool that reads EXIF will show you what a photo is carrying — the camera details, the timestamp, and whether there are GPS coordinates. If there are, you'll see them as a latitude and longitude, which you can drop into any map to see the exact spot.
What matters is choosing a tool that respects the point of the exercise. Many online metadata viewers work by uploading your photo to their server to read it. For checking location privacy, that's self-defeating: you'd be sending the very photo you're worried about, location and all, to someone else's computer. Stripping the metadata is straightforward. A remover reads the image, discards the hidden data, and saves a fresh copy that contains only the picture. The clean copy looks identical; it simply no longer knows where or when it was taken, or on what device.
One small thing to watch: some photos rely on a hidden "orientation" flag to appear the right way up, and removing metadata can remove that flag too. A good remover bakes the correct rotation into the image first, so the clean copy still displays upright. If you ever strip metadata and find a photo suddenly sideways, that's the cause.
A sensible habit
You don't need to become paranoid about every picture. Most photos are shared through channels that already strip location, and most photos don't reveal anything sensitive even if they don't. The habit worth having is narrower: before you share a photo taken somewhere private — your home especially — with someone directly, check it, and clean it if needed. It takes a few seconds and closes a gap most people don't know is open.
The broader point is just awareness. Your photos can say more than you intended, quietly, and the only way to know what any given file is saying is to look. Now you know how.
